Winter's Story

clearwa-aquariu-2563369.jpgFor sculptor Donjo, one creature has been intriguing him for years: the Dolphin.  Donjo’s muse lead him to a dolphin with a miraculous story of survival: a tail-less sweetheart named Winter. In 2008, a baby dolphin was found by a fishing boat off the coast of Florida. They took her to be rehabilitated at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium not far away.  Despite their efforts, the dolphin, now dubbed “Winter”, lost her tail. Without her tail, her likelihood of survival dwindled. To protect her spine and keep her alive they decided to build her a prosthetic tail.  But procuring the piece was expensive.

Donjo, moved by the dolphin’s plight, was one of the only people from the public allowed to swim with Winter to help raise awareness for her prosthetic tail.  Now, in the lobby of the aquarium stands a proud statue inspired by the journey of Winter, created by Donjo himself and called: “Winter’s Dream.”   His objective is to develop public awareness and help with the preservation of marine life and other species around the world.
